British Gas is ramping up its Warm & Working scheme, providing free home upgrades, boiler servicing and energy efficiency improvements to vulnerable households who need extra support.
-
More than 500 households have already received around £500,000 of free upgrades.
-
The scheme is set to double this summer, with plans to support over 1,000 households, including eligible homes that are not British Gas customers.
Thousands more households will be offered free boiler services and home upgrades as British Gas ramps up its Warm & Working scheme ahead of winter to help tackle rising energy costs.
The scheme supports households who are financially vulnerable or at risk of fuel poverty by providing practical, in-home improvements that can make a real difference to comfort, safety and energy costs.
“By expanding our Warm & Working scheme, we will support more people with practical improvements to make their homes more efficient. We want to give households peace of mind and help them avoid unexpected breakdowns when they need their heating the most."
Gary Booker, Managing Director at British Gas
Through the scheme, expertly trained British Gas engineers carry out tailored upgrades in the home. This can include boiler servicing, heating system improvements, smart thermostats, radiator upgrades and essential safety checks such as carbon monoxide detector installations. These measures help homes run more efficiently and lower the risk of unexpected breakdowns during the colder months.
Keeping your boiler in good working order can help save energy and avoid costly breakdowns. Regular servicing keeps heating running efficiently, while upgrading to an A-rated boiler could save households up to £180 a year on their heating bills.
Gary Booker, Managing Director at British Gas, said: “We know many households are very concerned about their energy costs, and we want to do everything we can to help. By expanding our Warm & Working scheme, we will support more people with practical improvements to make their homes more efficient. We want to give households peace of mind and help them avoid unexpected breakdowns when they need their heating the most.
“This is just one of the ways we are helping those struggling with energy costs – there is lots of support available such as grants and advice we offer through the British Gas Energy Trust. And you don’t need to be a British Gas customer to be eligible for help.”
British Gas will be directly contacting people eligible for the Warm & Working scheme – which is offered to those in receipt of the Warm Home Discount – helping many more households access support faster.
But people do not need to be existing British Gas customers to qualify. As long as they meet the applicable eligibility criteria1. they can be referred into the scheme through partner organisations or the British Gas Energy Trust, ensuring support reaches those most in need.
Looking ahead, British Gas plans to expand the scheme further during the 2026–27 period, with the ambition to support more households.
