British Gas will step in to protect the customers of Tomato Energy Limited (“Tomato Energy”) and ensure they continue to receive an uninterrupted supply of electricity after Tomato Energy announced that it has ceased trading.

Since 2021, British Gas has stepped in to support over 700,000 customers from ten failed suppliers, with Tomato Energy being the latest.

Tomato Energy supplies around 15,000 domestic and 8,000 non-domestic customers across the UK, and the transfer of customers to British Gas is part of Ofgem’s Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) process.

British Gas is now working to set up accounts for former Tomato Energy customers and in the coming days, it will contact customers directly about the process of moving over, so there is no need for Tomato customers to get in touch.

"Tomato’s demise marks the 31st supplier to collapse since 2021. Ofgem’s inaction on financial resilience has left customers exposed for too long, and every household in the UK has faced a £100 bill as a result of these failures."

Chris O'Shea, Group Chief Executive, Centrica

Customers should take a meter reading where possible and provide this to British Gas when prompted. British Gas will take care of everything else; it  will be on hand to help with any questions and will reach out to these customers to give more information on the next steps. In the meantime, customers should refer to the dedicated webpage  on the British Gas website.

Chris O’Shea, Group Chief Executive, Centrica said: “Tomato’s demise marks the 31st supplier to collapse since 2021. Ofgem’s inaction on financial resilience has left customers exposed for too long, and every household in the UK has faced a £100 bill as a result of these failures. Urgent reform is needed—Ofgem must ensure all suppliers are robust, comply with capital adequacy rules, and ring-fence customer funds to prevent this cycle from repeating.

"Recent reports suggest Ofgem has relaxed the rules for large suppliers in financial distress, even as Tomato was allowed to fail. We need greater transparency to understand what is happening, enabling customers to decide whether suppliers deserve their trust. We are proud to step up for Tomato Energy’s customers—their energy supply is secure, their credit balances will be protected, and we will make their transition to British Gas seamless.”
